Help me with Asset Labelling Asset Labels vary greatly but there are a couple of things to remember. Asset Labels need to be permanent. If you spend the time and effort labelling assets then you expect them to be around for a while. If you are thinking of printing them yourself then you must have the right equipment to be successful and print the right labels. 1. Paper Labels are no good. A paper label absorbs moisture and this can discolour or destroy the label. Dust and grime cannot be cleaned with any fluid as it will only make it worse. Labels need to be made from a synthetic material for this reason. 2. Printing must be permanent. Even synthetic labels must have permanent printing. This means that for most labels they need to be printed with resin printing ribbon, not wax resin. 3. Do they need to be laminated? Labels printed with Resin ribbon do not usually require lamination. Lamination is usually done for paper labels to avoid moisture contamination. 4. Should I print them myself? Unless you already have the equipment the answer is no. A synthetic asset label can be printed for $70 per thousand labels so why should you bother with the expense and training time. You would need to be printing at least 10,000 to even think about it. Tips when applying labels
1. Clean the area where the label is to be applied. You only need to carry a small amount of methylated spirit or similar and a lint free cloth. If the area is dusty or has a greasy finish (this can be from human hands) then the label won't stick properly.2. Allow the label at least 24 hours for the adhesive to cure before "testing" the adhesive. 3. Have a plan. Always apply labels in the same place on the same type of item. For example, on a monitor you may apply the label say on the side of the monitor on the right at the front. Imagine doing an audit and having the labels in different locations on the same type of item. Compare this with having them all in the same place. A simple thing, but so often neglected. 4. Make sure the label spot is accessible. Whether you are going to scan the barcode on the label or just read it visually, it is important that the person doing the audit doesn't have to crawl under desks or move to many things. Consider this when you are deciding where to put the labels.
