Can I have a Barcode Scanner with GEAC Pathway?

Yes, you can use a barcode scanner with GEAC Pathways. We have helped lots of customers reduce the time they take to receive payments and be more accurate at the same time.

There are two ways we can use barcode scanners. One is the keyboard wedge mode without any modifications and the others are scanners that are specially programmed to use the Postal payment barcode. Here is some information on the specially programmed barcode readers.

Specially programmed Barcode readers
These are the most common scanners we provide for GEAC Pathways. In this situation the most commonly used barcode is the postal payment barcode put on the Rates/Animal/Water notices etc. This is the barcode we use. Normally the different departments and types of notices have differing entry requirements in the GEAC software.

We program the barcode readers to recognize the differences in the barcode by the type of notice. Once we establish whether it is (for example) a rates notice then we add required characters, extract data from the barcode and insert other required characters. This sounds complicated but it really isn't.

Here is an example of what we can make the scanner do.

Postal barcode data: 2224012345600234782
(this is what might be in your postal barcode)

Here is what we may make the barcode reader do:

RA - Enter these characters to identify the type of notice

TAB - Move to next field

12345 - Enter the Acct number

TAB - Move to next field

TAB - Move to next field

234.79 - Enter the amount to be paid on this acct

We would program multiple routines so that an animal or water notice will carry out differing sequences to suit whatever the data entry is required. [↑]

So what is the result?
The result is that a customer walks up to your cashier counter, they hand over their notice, the cashier has the same screen up all the time and simply scans the barcode. The sequence will enter characters, move the cursor, enter data etc until it gets to an area where operator input is required. This represents a significant saving of time and also a greater increase in accuracy. [↑]

So how do I know if this will work for me?
We will need to discuss what you need to provide to us in order for us to give you a final quote for this. Some sample notices and also a step by step (character by character) analysis of the steps you use to process a payment is also required. Just phone us on 1300 762 603 and we can help you. [↑]

Can I use my own barcode readers?
Usually the answer to this is no. We use readers which have the special capability to handle these different programming situations. [↑]

How much does it cost?
We will need to confirm this with you as you have a few options for scanners and programming. To give you an idea, programming is a one off fee usually between $300 and $500 ex GST. Each scanner is around the $300 ex GST with the program loaded on it. [↑]

Do I need software?
There is no PC software required at all. The scanners hold the program themselves and manipulate the data within the device. When connected to the PC, normal operating system software will download the USB driver to connect to the scanner. [↑]

Can I talk to someone you have done this for?
Yes, absolutely. Just talk to us and we will arrange it for you. We have some very happy IT and counter managers!

Here is a link to an article which may also help, entitled "Barcode Scanner saves time and money".

The most common statement is "I can't believe you just plugged it in and then it just worked!" [↑]
